Birdwatching Short Breaks at Sandcastle Cottage
The Fife coastline and islands in the Firth of Forth offer a wealth of opportunity to birdwatchers to visit and observe many different sea bird colonies, including puffins on The Island of May, where 200,000 seabirds can be found during the peak of the seabird season. As well as the Puffins there are Kittiwakes, Guillemots, Razorbills, Fulmars, Arctic and Common Terns, Eider, Oystercatchers, Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gulls. - Click on this link to read an article about the different species to be found on the Island of May.
The Island of May Ferry operates boat trips from Anstruther Harbour from April to September, with April and May being the best times to see nesting birds.
Within easy walking distance along the Fife Coastal Path from Sandcastle Cottage, lie two sites of particular interest to birdwatchers - the Scottish Wildlife Trust's reserve at Kilminning Coast and Fife Ness. At Fife Ness Muir there is a seawatching hide built by Fife Bird Club. We've found the Fat Birder website a useful source of information about Birding in Fife.
Within Crail itself, a short walk up Kirk Wynd from Sandcastle Cottage takes you to the entrance to Denburn Wood - a delightful little area where the winding Den Burn wends its way through the wood and provides a natural habitat for both native and visiting species.
